If you have a turnout rug for your horse then you might be wondering if you also require a stable rug. The answer is yes! Whilst the turnout rug will keep your horse warm, dry and clean when they are outside, it should not then be used in the stable.
Insulation and Clipping
Horses do have their own coats to protect them from the cold but they can still get chilly in the stable environment. This is especially true if they have been clipped. Clipping removes their natural insulation and they are unable to move about sufficiently in the stable to generate more body heat.
Why a Stable Rug?
It is not pleasant for your horse to be left in a damp or wet turnout rug when they return to the stable. This can make chills even more likely and will prevent you from washing or drying out the rug before using it again. A stable rug provides a dry and warm alternative and will result in less itching and rubbing. Stable rugs do not feature a waterproof layer and so should not be used outdoors.
Stable rugs are available with light, medium and heavy fills. Horses vary in their ability to retain heat and so you will need to establish the correct type of fill for your animal’s needs. Those needs could also vary according to the weather. For the maximum protection from the cold choose a combo stable rug which features an integral hood. Alternatively you can invest in a detachable hood for when you need it.
