Wear and tear on the cartilage, which covers the articular surfaces of joints, is a common cause of reduced mobility in horses and ponies, especially those that are older or participate in a strenuous training and competition programme. As cartilage does not have its own blood supply, it relies on the bone underneath and the joint fluid to provide nutrients and compounds to maintain its health and shock-absorbing properties. For horses that are aging or are in heavy use, the bone and synovial fluid may not be able to meet the need for these key nutrients, leading to stiffness and reduced mobility. In order to maintain joint health, comfort, and mobility, a 500 kg horse should receive a dietary supplement of key nutrients such as Glucosamine HCI 12000, Methylsulphonylmethane (MSM), and Hyaluronic Acid (HA). The initial recommended dose is 30g per day for the first 10 days, and then may be reduced to 15g per day to maintain the desired response.
