You may be wondering how jodhpurs differ from riding breeches. Well, whilst breeches tend to finish at the calf, jodhpurs are longer in the leg and finish at the ankle. Jodhpurs are designed to be worn with ankle boots, jodhpur boots and paddock boots whereas breeches are best worn with long boots. Jodhpur boots are classic riding boots that you won’t want to be without. Ankle height and with ankle straps and low heels, these boots are functional, comfortable and fashionable.
What are Origins of Jodhpurs?
You might also have thought about where jodhpurs may have originated. The style was actually first worn in India but was a riding pant which was tight at the calves but which flared at the hips. Then, in 1897, Pratap Singh who was the son of the Maharaja of Jodhpur, visited England with his polo team. They were sporting riding pants which were said to have been designed by Singh himself. The pants made a big impression and were quickly adopted in this country. At first they were only worn by men as women were not yet wearing trousers and were still riding side saddle.
Before the invention of the Jodhpurs, tall boots that extended to just below the knee were worn with riding breeches. But the revolutionary design of jodhpurs meant that tall riding boots were no longer required. This was because the new style of breeches protected the inner calf from rubbing. Jodhpur Boots for men and jodhpur boots for women were and are a major boon as they are so easy to put on and take off.

In the 1920’s women had become somewhat more liberated and began to wear jodhpurs. Their flattering shape soon saw the pants arrive on the catwalks and one of the earliest adopters of the style as a fashion statement was Coco Chanel. Jodhpurs remain both the practical and stylish choice for riding but today’s designs benefit from the latest technical fabrics too.
Junior Jodhpurs: Young Equestrian Essentials
Equestrianism is an ever growing sport, popular with people of all ages. With something to offer in every discipline, whether this is to grow and compete as an athlete or simply to spend some time with horses once a week. It is no surprise many children, from a very young age, find themselves drawn to the world of horses.
Once the passion for riding has set in, many parents will be looking to kit out their children with the appropriate riding apparel. Enter, junior jodhpurs. As many of us veteran equestrians know, jodhpurs are an essential element of the equestrian wardrobe. Soft and flexible, they provide both comfort and practicality for riding.
The Benefits
Junior jodhpurs are similar to adult styles. Designed for children from tiny to teens, they provide the same level of comfort and protection but in a smaller package. Junior jodhpurs are also very affordable! With many styles, including competition and leisure jodhpurs, being priced competitively. This means that you can usually grab a few pairs to give your little one some variety. It also gives you the ability to wash a pair in time for the next outing.
There seems to be a colour or pattern to suit every taste. Varying from bright and bold colours, to pairs with polka dots, stripes, stars, glitter and sometimes even a little horse print on the fabric! This is enough to make any adult equestrian with a penchant for colour rather jealous! These jodhpurs also offer the same levels of robust wear as regular jodhpurs. So there is no need to worry about long days at the stables, or weekends away at pony camp. The jodhpurs are sure to last the course. Indeed kids will almost certainly have grown out of them before they give up the ghost.
Are Junior Jodhpurs Suitable for all Occasions?
As mentioned, junior jodhpurs offer a wide variety of styles which incorporate both leisure and competition wear, so there is no need to worry when it comes to choosing the most suitable for all occasions. All of the leading brands offer a variety of designs and colours which are suitable for the serious competitor, including that all important bling for the extra wow factor.
The Fit
As with most equestrian clothing sizes do vary slightly from range to range. But as a basic guideline, junior jodhpurs are available for kids aged from 3 to 14 years with waist sizes from around 18" to 28".
Overall, junior jodhpurs are ideal for a growing equestrian. They are comfortable, durable and stylish and are far the best choice for riding. If, like me, you are lucky enough to be blessed with short legs, you may even be able to treat yourself to that exciting polka dot pattern, even when you are slightly more advanced in years...

Are Summer Jodhpurs a Good Investment?
If you are like me then you spend a great deal of time with our horses and so you need several pairs of jodhpurs. I virtually live in mine! But there are several types of jodhpurs to choose from so which ones should you invest in and are summer jodhpurs worth it?
Let’s face it, with different styles, performance levels and a variety of colours on offer, you are not short on options. If you are to avoid blowing your budget to smithereens, it pays to decide which styles would enhance your equestrian wardrobe before you start to shop. No jodhpurs are a wise investment if you don’t actually need them.
One question which certainly springs to mind is do you require summer jodhpurs in addition to your winter clothing? Will these jodhpurs be more comfortable and also add a new dimension to your equestrian style?
Lighter Fabrics
Both summer and winter jodhpurs are fashioned from breathable, technical fabrics. However, although summer Jodhpurs have a similar feel to winter styles, they are lighter. The lighter fabric will make life more bearable on the hottest days. This is particularly important if you are working at the stable as well as riding. There is nothing worse than having to work when you are overheating or getting unsightly sweat patches when riding.
Summer jodhpurs will also dry more quickly which can be a real boon. The lighter material is less restricting too, giving you more freedom of movement. If you have ever experienced one of those days when you are so hot that you want to rip off your clothes and jump in the horse trough, then summer jodhpurs could be your saviours!
Brighter Colours to Lift Your Look
The arrival of the sunshine always engenders the feel-good factor and gives you a lift. Summer days are certainly best complemented by cheerful outfits, even at the stables. Although there is little you can do to alter the style of jodhpurs, you can go for a brighter and lighter look in the summer months. Summer jodhpurs are available in a variety of bright and breezy colours and even patterned fabrics. These will reflect your cheerful mood and enable you to ring the changes when you feel the need.
Winning Summer Jodhpurs
You will probably require more than one pair of jodhpurs and so it makes sense if you have different styles to choose from. This will enable you to dress to suit both the weather and your mood. With summer jodhpurs you can liven things up and inject some colour into your life when you want to. When you don’t, you can always revert to a more traditional look. If you compete then you will certainly need traditional jodhpurs as those flowery number in pink might be a little frowned upon if you wore them in the arena!
Your equestrian wardrobe can facilitate a little personal expression but only at the right moments!
